Brefne Nursery School- learning for life

About our school...

At Brefne Nursery School we see our children as individuals who come to us with a variety of experiences which we can nurture and build upon. We aim to be an extension of the home environment. We would encourage our parents to come into the school to see what we are doing and to have a look at the various displays of photographs and artwork around the room. We value the daily contact with parents/carers of our children and will always welcome them and take time to listen to what they have to say.

We wish to create a caring, stimulating learning environment where children feel confident to explore, to develop their skills and increase their knowledge of the world around them.

At Brefne we are very influenced by the early years educators in the area of Reggio Emila in Italy. The "Reggio approach" as it has become known values the child's own experiences and the importance of the parents as co-educators. It does not see the teacher as the person who makes all the decisions about what a child will learn or as the one with all the answers. Instead the "Reggio"curriculum is characterized by many features advocated by contemporary research on young children. These include allowing the children opportunities for creative thinking and exploration. Also acknowledging that children can learn from each other and can problem-solve together with the adult there to guide their thinking with open-ended questioning and by providing appropriate materials.Teachers often work on projects with small groups of children, while the rest the class may continue to make choice from a wide variety of play materials .

The schools in Reggio see the importance of the physical environment in the children's learning and use natural materials, mirrors and light to allow the children to look at things from different angles and to create an interesting and stimulating environment.

They use documentation and comments which are analysed by the staff to help them understand how the children learn and to help them in their further planning. The documentation can also be displayed around the classroom in order to make learning visible to the children and the adults in the community.
