Brefne Nursery School- learning for life

Brefne nursery school has a colourful history of which we are priviledged to be a part. As our history goes back half a century we would be delighted if any of our past pupils would sign our guestbook and add their own memories of the nursery or update us on what they are doing now.

Brefne Nursery School was opened in Deember 1956 after the Nursery School Association approached the Belfast Education Committee to provide nursery education for children in the care of the Welfare Authority at Brefne Residential Nursery, Somerton Road, Belfast.

Miss J Martin was superintendent.

In 1958 the Education Committee, the Welfare Committee and the H.M Inspectors agreed that a new building should be planned to house the nursery which was encountering poor accommodation, inadequate heating and other difficulties.

The new wooden building was erected in the grounds of the  home in February 1961.

At first the nursery provided education solely from the children from the home. In 1963 fewer children were in redisdence at the home because of a drive to find foster care for them. From this time non-welfare children were admitted.

Mrs Nancy Flemmimg was appointed principal in 1964. Demand for places in the nursery school increased and in 1874 Mrs Flemming introduced a mixed pattern of attendance.

Mrs Brenda Killough replaced Mrs Flemming as principal in 1980.
